Common RV Water Heater Problems
No Hot Water on Electric
If your water heater works on propane but not electric, the heating element is likely burned out. This is a cheap and easy fix. Make sure to turn off power and drain the tank before replacing.
Thermostat / ECO Failure
The ECO (Energy Cut-Off) switch trips if the water gets too hot. If it won't reset or keeps tripping, replace the thermostat/ECO assembly. These are usually combined into one unit on RV water heaters.
Anode Rod Maintenance
The anode rod is a sacrificial metal that corrodes to protect your tank from rust. Replace it every 1-2 years to extend tank life. If it's completely dissolved, your tank may already be damaged.
When to Replace vs Repair
If your water heater is over 10 years old or the tank is leaking, replacement is usually the better option. Modern tankless water heaters are also an upgrade worth considering.
