Understanding Propane Regulators

Your propane regulator reduces high-pressure gas from your tanks (typically 250 PSI) down to a safe 11 inches of water column (~0.4 PSI) for your appliances.

Single-Stage vs Two-Stage

Single-Stage: Basic and cheap, but outlet pressure can vary as tank pressure drops. Not ideal for RVs with sensitive appliances.

Two-Stage (Recommended): First stage drops to ~10 PSI, second stage drops to 11" WC. Provides consistent pressure regardless of tank level. Better for furnaces and refrigerators.

Automatic Changeover

Found on RVs with dual tanks. Automatically switches to the full tank when one runs empty. Includes a red/green indicator. Worth the upgrade for convenience.

Signs of a Failing Regulator

  • Weak flames on stove burners
  • Furnace cycling on/off
  • Fridge not cooling on propane
  • Hissing sound near the regulator
  • Frozen regulator vent (sign of over-pressurization)
